Is castor oil good for hair growth?

There are many reasons why you may want to use castor oil to stimulate hair growth, and there are many causes for hair growth becoming stagnant to begin with, as various health conditions or simply a lack of a good haircare routine can be to blame. Although the problem may not always be curable simply just by applying castor oil, nevertheless, castor oil has become renowned for it's ability to penetrate the hair at the scalp level to give the hair the best possible environment for hair growth.

What are the benefits of castor oil for hair growth?

For centuries, castor oil has been used for hair growth, and has become a key ingredient in the hair oil blend for it's ability to enhance hair growth, improving overall hair fullness and health. These are the ways that castor oil can contribute to healthy hair growth:

  1. Scalp hydration and nourishment

Castor Oil is rich in ricinoleic acid which is the key ingredient when it comes to healthy hair growth. Ricinoleic acid has a powerful ability to hydrate the scalp but also to help it to retain moisture, minimising moisture loss. This is important as when the scalp is hydrated and not irritated, the follicles have a nourished environment to grow hair. As ricinoleic acid is a mono-unsaturated fat, this means it has a small enough molecular size to deeply penetrate the scalp, reaching the hair follicles to provide intense nourishment.

  1. Protect the scalp from damage

Castor oil is known for hair regrowth and is the perfect scalp oil treatment as it is rich in Vitamin E, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-fungal properties, all of which protect the scalp from damage. Anti-oxidants in the ricinoleic acid and Vitamin E work to ensure that the scalp is not affected by free radicals which can damage hair cells, often leading to a lack of hair growth, while anti-inflammatory properties in the ricinoleic acid reduce inflammation of the scalp, preventing the damage of hair follicles. The cells in the scalp need to be unharmed and healthy for the normal hair growth process to occur, making castor oil a beneficial ingredient when it comes to hair growth.

  1. Increase blood circulation to the scalp

Pure Castor oil can also be used to increase blood circulation to the scalp which is an important part of the hair growth process. The science of the hair suggests that during the growth phase in a hair follicle, the hair will absorb all of the nutrients available in order to grow. For the hair to grow, the follicles need to absorb a sufficient amount of nutrients, and enhanced blood circulation can increase the amount of nutrients that reach the hair. If there isn't a sufficient amount of nutrients supplied to the hair during this process, it may lead to short, weaker strands that are likely to break.

How to apply castor oil to enhance hair growth

You can also apply the castor oil using techniques that support the castor oil to increase blood circulation to the scalp, creating a healthy hair growth environment. By gently massaging the scalp as you apply the castor oil, you increase blood flow to the scalp and encourage hair growth.

Castor oil is both nourishing and strengthening for hair and the scalp, with a meticulous combination of proteins, vitamins, and fatty acids. We recommend using a castor oil infused hair oil blend, allowing the hair to benefit from a carefully crafted blend of oils that hydrate and protect the hair and scalp and encourage hair growth, for long healthy hair.
