What is hair oiling?
In the haircare realm, there are many different aspects of haircare that you may be used to hearing about, whether it's haircare tips, hair styling advice, or information about different hair treatments. There are also many trends that come and go within the industry. But one element of haircare that has been around for centuries and is only getting more popular and more researched, is hair oiling.
You may have heard people talking about hair oiling, and may be wondering what exactly it means and what is involved in the process of hair oiling. Let's look into the meaning of hair oiling and answer some questions you may have about it:
Why is hair oiling good for the hair?
The most simple way to think of it may be that the hair just like other parts of the body, needs sufficient nutrients to be healthy and also look it's best. There are ways to encourage healthier hair, such as eating a balanced diet, and hair oiling.
Hair oiling refers to the process of applying natural oils to the hair and scalp to tackle specific hair concerns or to simply enhance the natural beauty of the hair. Each natural oil has different properties, therefore it can provide different benefits to the hair, so different hair oils may work best on different people.
Choosing the right hair oil
It is good to find a hair oil that is lightweight as this not only allows the oil to penetrate the hair better, but it will not weigh your hair down making it look greasy, allowing you to oil your hair and style it as normal. This also encourages consistency, which is important as when you oil the hair often your hair will get consistent benefits, helping it to tackle any environmental or styling damage during the week, or to maintain healthy moisture in the hair, as well as keep the scalp healthy.
Different hair oils provide the hair with different benefits, so in order to support the hair and scalp in different ways to maintain and enhance healthy hair overall, we recommend using a hair oil blend that is a carefully selected combination of oils, formulated to help with many hair concerns such hair growth, scalp concerns, hair dryness, frizz and hair breakage, as well as made to enhance shine, and make the hair soft and appear healthy overall.
When choosing the right oil, take your hair type in to consideration, as this will help you to understand how well your hair may be able to absorb hair oil. A lightweight oil blend will be suitable for all hair types, as it is buildable so more oil can be applied depending on your hair type.
Hair oiling and how to do it properly
As hair oiling is a process, the results can also depend on the way you apply the oils to your hair and scalp. It is important to remember to be gentle, avoiding damaging the hair or irritating the scalp, as well as taking the time to make sure the hair is evenly coated with the hair oil and no areas of concern are missed.
Once you have selected the hair oil of your choice, based on what haircare results you want to achieve, carefully distribute 2-3 pumps of hair oil evenly throughout the hair, making sure the strands are evenly coated. When oiling the scalp, make sure to gently massage the scalp when you apply the oil, as this will help increase blood circulation to the scalp which can help encourage nutrient flow to the scalp.
Let the oil sit for at least one or two hours so that it has time to absorb into the hair, and follow with gently washing the oil out of the hair. If you think your hair needs a more intensive treatment, you can also leave the oil in overnight , or begin oiling the hair a few days before washing.
It is also important to not apply too much oil to the hair or scalp, as this can clog the hair follicles. We recommend applying the amount that your hair is able to effectively absorb, to minimise the risk of over saturating your hair and scalp.
