Can Damaged Hair Be Fixed?

Many things can contribute to hair damage, such as the overuse of heat styling tools, chemical treatments and hair dyes, as well as a general lack of care that can gradually cause damage to the cuticle. Fortunately, it is possible to fix damaged hair, and it is even easier to repair damaged hair when you take steps to take care of your hair sooner rather than later. This is because once the hair becomes damaged, it is also even more vulnerable to further damage. The more damaged the hair the more difficult it may be to repair and may take longer to restore healthy hair, than if you incorporate certain tips into your haircare routine as soon as you see any initial signs of hair damage.

How To Take Care Of Damaged Hair

When the hair is damaged, it needs to recieve extra nourishment to repair the damage as well as to prevent further damage. This can be done it many ways, by minimising added stress to the hair to allow the hair time to repair and also get maximum benefit from other nourishing steps that help to restore healthy hair. Here is a list of the main steps to take to repair your damaged hair:

  1. Minimise The Use Of Heat Styling Tools

Although heat styling tools can help to frequently style the hair, the regular use of heat can cause damage to the hair over time. Ideally, if possible it is best to not use heat on the hair at all, but this is particularly important for hair that is already damaged and needs time to repair and to ensure the hair doesn't get further damaged from heat. However, if it is not possible to cut out the use of heat styling tools altogether, we recommend using heat on the hair once a week, as well as lowering the temperature on the styling tools to help minimise the chances of heat damage as much as possible. Also, when it comes to using heat on the hair, it is necessary to use a heat protectant spray, whether your hair is healthy or damaged, a heat protectant shields the hair from damage, giving it an extra layer of protection to help preserve the healthy strands.

  2. Avoid over shampooing the hair

Although it is natural to feel that having freshly washed hair is what makes the hair look and feel it's best, this is only the case for hair that is well nourished and is not being stripped of the hairs natural moisturising oils as a result of shampooing the hair too often. If you shampoo your hair more than necessary it can contribute to dryness and weak hair, by weakening the hair shafts and damaging the strands. As everyones hair is different, the ideal time to leave in between washes varies, but for hair that is damaged we recommend washing the hair once a week, to find the perfect balance between allowing the hair to maintain its natural moisturising oils as well as soaking in benefits from hydrating hair oil treatments, but also to have a hair wash day often enough that your hair is frequently refreshed, and taken care of with good a quality shampoo and hair mask.

  3. Incorporate a hair mask into your haircare routine

Using a hair mask before washing your hair gives your hair an extra opporunity for a boost of nourishment and hydration which can significantly improve the health of the hair. If your hair is damaged, we recommend leaving the hair mask in for at least 30 minutes to allow it to deeply nourish the hair, but you will see better results the longer you leave it in the hair.. Apply the hair mask to damp hair and leave in before finally washing out and shampooing the hair. An intensly nourishing hair mask will add moisture and shine to the hair, helping to keep the hair healthy during the week and be less prone to breakage and further damage.

  4. Regularly trim the hair

By getting regular trims you will remove hair that is most likely to be damaged such as split ends and brittle strands; if split ends or weak strands are not removed, they may break further up the hair causing more damage to more of the hair. To keep the hair looking healthy and to minimise the chances of futher damage, it is best to get regular haircuts every 3-6 months.

  5. Use a hydrating and nourishing hair oil

A hair oil that contains hydrating and nourishing oils will help to repair damaged hair, enhance the health of the hair, and protect it from damage. We recommend using a hair oil that deeply penetrates the hair adding ultimate hydration and protecting the hair from moisture loss. This is important when the hair is damaged as intense nourishment and hydration will help to smooth the cuticle, making the hair soft and silky, with improved natural shine. For hair that is deeply damaged, you will benefit from an overnight hair treatment that allows the hair oil to have time to absorb more effectively into the hair and achieve best results. Apply a hair oil for at least 1-2 hours before washing, allowing the oil to penetrate the hair before washing.
