Why Do Some Hairstyles Help Damaged Hair?
When your hair is damaged it is important to take extra care day to day to protect the hair and to minimise further damage. As our hair is always styled in some way, it is good to know which hairstyles are the most beneficial for preserving and protecting the health of our hair and scalp.
If your hair is damaged, you may have brittle or dry strands which make it more prone to breakage. If weak hair is not treated delicately and protected, it may be more likely to catch on every day items around us, pulling on the hair causing breakage. This creates more damage and the hair has to work harder to repair itself, therefore it is best to protect the hair using certain hairstyles alongside doing regular conditioning treatments, giving damaged hair time to get back to a healthy condition.
Here are some of the hairstyles we recommend for damaged hair:
Low Bun
A low bun is an ideal protective hairstyle as it protects the strands and provides less strain on the scalp by avoiding the natural pull of gravity. When wearing a low bun it is important to make sure the hair isn't too tight to avoid any hair loss or breakage due to pressure and pulling on the scalp. When the bun is tight enough to ensure there are no loose hairs that can catch on things in the environment and break, but loose enough to minimise pressure on the scalp, this is is a very effective hairstyle for protecting the strands.
Messy High Bun
A messy bun can be a good choice if you are at home and want your hair completely out of the way and out of your face. In order to achieve the messy bun look, the bun doesn't need to be tighly pulling on the scalp, making it a healthy choice for the scalp. This style also protects the hair strands and prevents friction and breakage as the hair is less likely to catch on things in the environment.
A Braided Bun
A braided bun is our most recommended and loved protective hairstyle as it provides the most protection to the hair. When the hair is braided first, it creates one layer of protection as the hair is loosely braided together but tight enough so that strands can't become loose and break from friction. When the style is then finished by putting the braid in a bun, this adds another layer of protection, making sure that you are doing the most to protect your hair from any further damage. It's important to make sure the style is loose enough so that it doesn't cause a strain to the scalp or pull on the hair, but also tight enough that the hair can be protected. This is a perfect hairstyle for hair that is in need of extra care.
Combine With A Nourishing Hair Oil
Harir Hair Oil is our nourishing oil blend that can be combined alongside protective hairstyles for maximum haircare benefits. Oiling the hair and following with a protective hairstyle allows a hair oil treatment to penetrate deeper into the hair and scalp, preventing the oil from rubbing off onto surfaces such as pillowcases. By keeping the hair more confined to one space it also allows the scalp to generate heat, improving hair oil absorption.
